Another Trip Around The Sun

And why I don’t fear aging

I turned thirty nine on Sunday. My oldest son turned twelve on Sunday as well. If you’re reading this on Tuesday, May 19, my middle child is turning 10. Kylee’s birthday is on Sunday. (Ivy’s birthday is in October. She’s happy and sad about it). Funeral Psalms just celebrated its 5th anniversary. Time waits on no man or album.

Pretty wild, right? Birthday week on steroids. I don’t fear aging. I don’t particularly enjoy my birthday. A weird mix of social anxiety and the pressure of feeling celebrated and doing cool stuff, I guess. I don’t know. I don’t fear getting older though. I’m not forty. I’m actually excited to turn forty. I guess maybe I enjoy being older cause I know more. Experiences more. And I’m doing cool stuff with my life. I’m not wealthy by any means. My band isn’t successful by the standard industry metrics. But my life is rad. I don’t not like my birthday though. It’s the best day of the year by far.

I don’t know. If you feel yourself wanting, make steps towards fixing it. Welcome to Austin’s Life Advice Corner. Haha. Life’s too short to wait around and not do cool stuff. Don’t hurt people. Be kind. But figure out how to make stuff work in your life. Moderation and balance and do cool stuff I guess. Without going full Ayn Rand, you should still be a productive member of society. Work hard (or don’t). Produce. Make a positive impact on society.

Ask my in ten years when I’m forty nine and I might have a different opinion of life, but whatever. Some internet trolls would argue that my positive societal impact would be not releasing more undertaking songs. Not gonna happen trolls.

Why am I not afraid of aging? Life is good. I’m doing what I want. I’m not gonna cry about being thirty nine. If I did, it wouldn’t change my age.

Band updates: announced all the idle threat shows, so now I don’t have to slyly hint around dates. Sorry to our Michigan homies. We’ll make it up there one day.

June 14 - St Louis

June 15 - South Bend

We’ve got a couple locals in and around San Diego too

May 23 - Oceanside

May 30 - North Park

August 1 - Vista.

We’ll see what the rest of the year brings. It’s not NIV shows in October. That didn’t pan out. But we’ll pivot to something else. We asked about FF pre-shows, but that’s unlikely to happen. We shall see!!

We need to write some more. Would love for us to take July to write and finish a bunch of songs. Maybe shoot some videos. Maybe sign a record deal. Let’s roll the dice and see if it’s snake eyes.

Concerts - saw Converge last Friday. They crushed. I can’t believe I’ve never seen them live. Kinda embarrassed so glad I remedied that. Kylee and I are most likely seeing Death Cab, Hayley Williams and Iron & Wine to round out the year. I’m sure more will pop up but all those shows are gonna be great.

JOHNNY’S CORNER: INDIKA

A brief story of a young nun wrestling with her faith who is tasked with a travel mission to deliver a letter and get this, she’s possessed by THE DEVIL HIMSELF!

I enjoyed the creativity of this game but if I had to complain (I don’t but I will), it would be that it’s too short. If a bigger development team had their hands on this game it would’ve been 20+ hours because the setting, story, and gameplay work well to draw you into its cold and dreary life.

While the main game visuals are realistic, the protagonist’s backstory is revealed through colorful retro-bit mini games which is stark contrast to the narrative content it’s delivering. There are couple puzzle sections in the game where you jump back and forth from reality to a distorted demonic world where the devil speaks to you, and the gameplay mechanic was so cool, I thought (and hoped) it would happen more.

The game ends almost abruptly, at what I thought would be the halfway point, and sort of makes you sit in what you’ve experienced and what your character (and you?) believe in. There’s not much more to say without getting into spoiler territory.

If you’re looking to play a weird short story on what you put your pursuits into and can find this one for under $10, maybe give it a go.

That’s it for today. I’d love to see some of you at our upcoming shows. Let’s hang out!

Buy merch if you want. Still have our windbreakers (even though it’s almost summer). Tank tops are in the store too.
