“Are You Not Entertained?”
And what it feels like to witness greatness
We don’t throw tomatoes at people anymore. Why is that? A comedian bombs and they get tomatoes tossed on stage. A band sucks and they get boo’d off the stage. Is it cause tomatoes cost too much money? Oh, that reminds me of how as teenagers, we’d egg cars and TP someone’s house but now those common amenities are too expensive to waste. We used to be a proper society.
Instead of the audience throwing tomatoes at the performer, it’s the reverse these days. Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the corporations are throwing tomatoes at US. Between movie streaming sites and music streaming platforms, we are just getting bombarded with schlock. Every day there’s a new AI band or new garbage movie with an incoherent script and terrible acting. And studios are like “here losers, eat this crap. AND pay more for our service.” Feels bad, yea?
Well, family, you know what feels good? Watching something GREAT. Listening to some music that challenges and pushes you. Encourages you to create. To be better. Causes you to [insert meme of guy sitting forward in his chair] I watched One Battle After Another this weekend. Don’t tell PTA that I didn’t see it in VistaVision, but I saw it! Feels like a movie we’ll be talking about in 30 years. Feels like a ‘dog day afternoon’ or ‘goodfellas’ type movie that’s gonna rise above and beyond its specific release. I haven’t really had conversations about it so my thoughts might be hyperbolic at the moment… this movie rules. It’s PTA at his most focused. Less Master hypnotic trance, less There Will Be Blood let me show off how adept I am at directing the greatest living actor. Less pot influenced (but still very influenced) than Inherent Vice. Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, The Master, There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread, Licorice Pizza, One Battle After Another. Hot diggity dog. What a great film maker. Leo rules in this movie. Benecio Del Toro as Sensei Sergio might be a top 50 film character of all time…. “Like Tom F***king Cruise.” Hype. Go see it if you can. Or don’t. That’s on you.
2025 has delivered some pretty sick movies. Sinner. One Battle After Another. The fall has some dope movies lined up too.
Give OBAA a couple years and I’m curious where it’ll end up in the cultural consciousness. I love the feeling of knowing you’re watching something Great. The Dark Knight (midnight IMAX release), Mad Max Fury Road, Children of Men. No Country for Old Men. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Some examples I can think of. Movies where when I was watching I had that moment of “oh shit, this is really really really good.”
The Chariot Fiancee. Every Time I Die Radical. Sufjan Stevens Carrie and Lowell concert at Copley Symphony Hall. Some good musical moments for me.
SHOWS: We’ve got some shows coming up.
October 18 at Garcia’s Tire Shop. Vigilant Booking has been crushing it for the past year with their DIY shows so we’re very excited about playing one of their shows. Outside. 4PM. 8 bands. Good ol’ fashion hardcore show.
November 9 at Programme. Nolan with Rad Music is awesome. Stoked to partner with him again. Programme is awesome. We’ve got some rad bands with us that night. Come hang out.
We are taking the rest of the year off after that to write. Got 6 songs. Want another 6. You guys are gonna get more tunes from us whether you like it or not.
MUSIC: our boys in Godseyes just put out some more music. Go listen.
Happy Furnace Fest week to those who celebrate. Hope the fest is a success so they do it again next year.
Also, the San Diego Padres are headed back to the playoffs! Back to back 90 win seasons. Back to back playoff appearances. 4 out of 6 years in the playoffs. LFGSD.
