memento rock and roll numquam moriturum esse

Aka rock n roll will never die (in latin)

At least, I think that’s what it means. I googled it. Not sure if Google is a reliable translator these days. If you saw 28 Years Later, maybe you shed a little tear reading that. If you didn’t, just know this: Rock N Roll Will Never Die. Even if the Sun is dying and/or a rage virus has spread through the UK orrrrr there’s an impending world war.

If I had a dime every time someone stared blankly at me when I say that “Sunshine” is one of my favorite movies… well, I’d still need you to visit our merch store and take advantage of the promo code I’ve had linked at the bottom of every newsletter. You read to the end, right?? Sunshine is the greatest unseen movie. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, a ragtag group of scientists head out on an expedition to reboot our dying sun with a nuclear bomb. It stars a post-28 Day Later Cillian Murphy, pre-Cap America Chris Evans, pre-Wong Benedict Wong, pre-Shogun Hiroyuki Sanada, post-crouching but pre-everything everywhere Michelle Yeoh, not to mention Rose Byrne, Mark Strong and Cliff Curtis. It’s got one of the great music cues of modern cinema and it just freakin rules.

Released in 2007, I was in Vegas when this movie came out and tried to find time to see it. I didn’t. Big regrets. Never seen it on the big screen and fingers crossed that changes. If Boyle and Garland seem familiar to you, well, shoot, it should. No shame if not. They wrote and directed 28 Days Later. Boyle did Slumdog Millionaire and Transpotting and many many more. Garland is one of my favorite modern film makers… Ex Machine, Annihilation. Devs, the potentially prescient Civil War (we don’t really need to talk about Men…) and they just teamed back up for the legacy sequel 28 Years Later. 28 Years rules. Go see it if you want. I don’t care if you don’t. They have a really good appetite for subverting genre expectations and as a duo are adept at finding humanity’s eccentricities while also maintaining tension. I know some people didn’t like it (JOSH! Lets chat).

A couple quick notes to keep my brain from wandering: I prefer fast zombies. Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead rules. The Walking Dead is trash. Did I mention I love Garland?

Ok - 28 Days Later is rad. Hope you enjoy it. Holler if you did. I also watched Friendship this week. That movie is a whole vibe. It’s “I Think You Should Leave” via the A24 machine. It’s awkward, hilarious, weird and a bit froggy.

With the remainder of my time today, I wanted to highlight a couple of under seen movies from the 2020s…. Movies released from 2020 to June 2025. Under seen, under rated, whatever, its my list.

Underwater - underwater “Alien” with Kristen Stewart. The ending rules.

The Green Knight - A24 trippy folktale about one of King Aurthur’s knights being a big ol’ coward

Tenet - live and let tenet. give into its hypnosis.

Sisu - gold digger swedish nazi killer.

The Killer - this might be my favorite Fincher movie.

Furiosa - we let this bomb at the box office. time will be favorable to this sweeping biblical epic

Rebel Ridge - rough and tumble action thriller starring a Green Lantern before he was cast as a Green Lantern

SHOWS

We have a show this week at Brick by Brick. Next week, I might write about our show process and how we prepare for local shows.

We play with Confessions of a Traitor. Rad Facedown Band from the UK. Solid metalcore riffs. Bloodlines from Texas. Also a Facedown band. Big up and coming trajectory these days. Got popular for writing an anti-p*rn song and the internet had fun with that. And Wightlorker from the Bay Area. We connected with Joe in the early days of the pandemic when we first signed to Solid State. We did our first tour with them so it’ll be nice to hang with our pals.

We’ll be playing 1) Nostalgia Can Be A Nasty Beast 2) All Smiles (aka Nuance) 3) No Friends 4) Wrenches 5) And The Silver Surfer 6) If You’re So Rich, Why Aren’t You Smart (aka Home, Sick) 7) Touch Dirt and 8 Oh, Negative - gotta blast through 8 songs in 25 minutes.

MERCH

We’re about to release some music which means it’s the perfect time to buy merch. (Releasing music usually means that money is spent. Buying merch is one of the ways we make money….) Promo code “newsletter” and/or “tomcruise”

ok bye bye!
