Tarantino is to movies as The Undertaking!...

Is to music.

Hello, welcome to our newsletter where we can make outrageous claims that are 100% true. Did I just claim that The Undertaking! is the music equivalent of Quintin Tarantino? Hell yea.

I’m mostly kidding.

But also, please take everything we say as fact.

I watched Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 over the weekend. I had a chance to see The Whole Bloody Affair a couple weeks back in Hollywood but I didn’t go (no regerts). I honestly haven’t watched those movies in a minute and I forgot how influential there were to me and my friend group back in 03/04. We used Battle Without Honor or Humanity** as our basketball walk song. Great choice. I def had one of the posters up in my room/dorm for a bit. Great movies. Like I said, I kinda forgot how great Kill Bill is. It’s got the pop energy mixed with small quiet flares and conversations. It made me re-evaluate my Tarantino rankings:

Inglorious Basterds (2 all time characters and two of the great scenes in film history)

Kill Bill 1/2

Once upon a time in Hollywood

Pulp Fiction

Jackie brown (this should be lower but its better than you think and Elmore Leonard)

Django

Hateful 8

Res Dogs

Death Proof

I hate rankings but here I mix both my perception, my favorites, my rewatchablility and the critical reception of these movies. For instance, Django is so good. It’s funny, it’s got great performances, but I just don’t really want to watch some of the violent stuff and the language. I am not prude. Far from it, but it makes me uncomfortable (QT’s intention, I’m sure). Same with Hateful 8. I might need to get that higher in my rankings cause it’s pretty great. 10/10 performances from almost everyone… but it’s uncomfortable at times. Pulp Fiction is his best movie, by the way.

After ranking, I was struck by how different all his films are YET there’s a very identifiable through line in all his work. You know you are watching QT. You know you’re in for a treat. You just know. Maybe you can’t put a finger on it (or in QT’s case, a toe) but you just know. And I had this epiphany that I’d love for the same to be true with The Undertaking! Every album, LP, EP, single, live set… any time you tune into The Undertaking! You just KNOW what you’re gonna get. It’s all a little different in vibe or execution but it’s there. You know what you’re getting.

Side note: In our discord, Cecil said he prefers the Coen’s to QT and we’ll accept that. My top 5 Coens are (in no particular order) Burn After Reading, Inside Llewelyn Davis, True Grit, Lebowski, No Country and Fargo.

Back to The Undertaking! I’ve harped on this crap for weeks now, but I NEVER wanna be a band that puts out the same crud song after song. Life’s too short to release crud. Hope we can deliver on this.

So yea, QT and the Coens are GOATED film makers. We’re low tier metalcore/hardcore that few listen to. It’s not the same convo. But it’s our newsletter and we’re the great band of all time.

Email me your rankings? Am I wrong? What’s your favorite QT movie?

Oh oh oh - I’ll do a QT chapter ranking some time. Spoilers, it’ll include mostly Brad Pitt.

** to this day, you put on this song and I’ll run through a wall. ultimate hype.
