The Undertaking! Media Club

when a band is trying to be more than a stupid band

years ago, we played a show in Seattle, Washington. a day after we played the show (it was fine), a friend in the area messaged us a screenshot showing us that i****gram pushed our show flyer to him that day. a day after the show happened. he said “dang, woulda been nice to know about this before.” he’s a band guy so it wasn’t meant as a slight… but as a band, we scratched our head and said “what the heck do we do if our tools aren’t letting people know about the things want them to know about?!?” its only gotten worse.

let’s recap: hypothetically speaking, you’re a fan of The Undertaking! you can engage with us on twitter, instagram, facebook, theundertakingrocks.com, bandsintown, songkick, spotify, apple music, itunes, youtube, youtube music, bluesky, threads, email, shopify, bandcamp, bigcartel, discord. swear to god, there’s probably more super obvious ones i’m missing, like SHOWS. oh god, I can’t believe I forgot about shows. you definitely can engage with us at shows. all that to say, holy crap, that sucks. being a fan of a band is hard. now consider the super fans who also follow the individual members of the bands!! point is: it often feels like all these tools work against us. joe schmo online creator: here’s what you need to do to get the algorithm working for you, first, pay for my online class - we’re kind of done with that.

so… here we are. we’ve talked internally for moooooonths about starting a newsletter. but i (austin) didn’t want to pull the trigger on it til the idea was right. didn’t know if we could commit to the bit. its time. we’re overdue actually.

welcome to The Undertaking! Media Club. if you’re here, welcome. if you wanna leave, i’m sure there’s a “unsubscribe” button below. but maybe, just maybe, give us a chance! the dream for this space is a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly newsletter showcasing what we have coming up (shows, music, merch, etc) AND what we’re watching, what we’re listening to, what games we’re playing. it seems too simple and/or too stupid but I saw Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and I really want to talk about it with people! Johnny is dying to talk about the Switch 2 with you all. we’re dying to let you know that we’re about to record a 5 song EP called “Only Left Alive To See The End” that includes some of the best stuff we’ve ever written. and here’s our platform.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

listen: I (Austin) am a huge Tom Cruise fan. a podcast i listen to recently blasted oblivion and it made me sad cause i love oblivion. his Spielberg run in the early 2000’s? so underrated. fortunately, this series finally got the recognition it deserves (Rogue Nation, Ghost Protocol, Fallout is an insane run). but man, this move kinda sucked. haha. i’m all for the big set pieces and the stunts but TFR was missing so much sauce that made some of the other entries rise above. felt like McQ and TC lost a lot of their humor on this mission. i won’t go into spoilers and overall, i am mostly positive on the film as a whole, but it definitely was a let down. glad to see it made some money. it’s been reported to be one of the top 5 most expensive films ever made and we NEED TC making movies. its good for the world. ethan hunt asks the audience and the president to trust him one more time… tom/ethan, i’ll trust you for the rest of my life. just make sure the movies are good.

We love Godseyes (east coast recap)

earlier this month we spent a week with our dear besties godseyes from long island, new york. we hit erie, buffalo, brooklyn, philly, providence and boston. had a phenomenal time. the shows were surprisingly good! we made a 10 minute recap on youtube if you want to check it out. it currently has 69 views so i hesitate to share it.

that’s it for this week. hope you don’t mind one more email each week from your favorite band.

peace and love.
